Diego Velázquez was an influential painter who was consistently favored and patronized by the Spanish crown. He painted innumerable portraits of the Spanish royal family and other notable people, such as the Pope. His work was important to artists and styles which followed including Picasso, Manet, and Dali. His masterpiece, “Las Meninas”, is gorgeous in its rendition of its regal subject matter and features a complex synthesis of compositional elements. Much has been written about this work in particular and his impact in general since his death in 1660.
