Marianne North was born in England in the 1830s. Perhaps one of the most famous botanical painters ever, she was also a biologist. She made great contributions to science while traveling around the globe as an itinerant painter. She visited seventeen countries on six continents to paint the strange and interesting plants she encountered. At least four of the plants that she painted were new to the scientific world and named after her. Many of her works now reside in her gallery in the corner of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
