Paintings by a Master
Though he was more prolific in printmaking, Durer's abilities as a painter were absolutely remarkable, especially during his life in the late 1400s and early 1500s. Overall, his use of color was subtle and refined, sticking to a largely muted pallet that allowed him to focus more on form and proportions in his works. Figures in his paintings are painstakingly shaded and colored to present a more realistic appearance. In select paintings, such as Pond in the Woods, Durer experimented with color and more visible brushstrokes.
