Though its name sounds like an educational institution, the Hudson River School is actually a mid-19th century American art movement that focused on landscape paintings. The artists involved in this movement often depicted areas in the Hudson River Valley and nearby areas like the Adirondack, Catskill and White Mountains, which is how the name originated. The Hudson River School is noted for being one of the first significant art movements to have begun in the U.S. and for proudly celebrating the natural beauty of the American landscape.
A Peaceful Place
Strongly influenced by Romanticism, Hudson River School artists depicted American landscapes as idyllic, pastoral settings. Peaceful agricultural scenes were often shown in golden light with soft textures and colors. There's a sense of awe and wonder in these depictions of untouched wilderness, many of which were painted in the open air. Works from this art movement initially focused on locations in the Northeast region of the U.S. Over time, there was a second wave of Hudson River School artists who went on to depict landscapes from other parts of the country and international destinations including New England, the Maritimes, the American West and South America.
